Urbino-style Vase
no 207
Description
A tall Urbino-style vase, on a round, slightly arched base, narrower in the center, with a large, wide belly and a rolled-up collar at the top. The upper part features handles in the form of two winding, green and spotted snakes on each side, with their heads resting on the vase’s collar. Below the snakes are semi-plastic, colorful mascarons. The base is blue and cobalt, with rocaille motifs and a butterfly against a background of green leaves. The belly on one side depicts Bacchus with his entourage and cupids, grapes in a basket, and figures of musicians with tambourines and trumpets. On the other, trees with lush greenery and period buildings against a mountain backdrop; above, the trees transition to a tapered collar.
The vase after a delicate restoration of the base.
