Description

A Boulle type writing Table with top close to oval with wavy outline, supported on four cabriole legs. The top, trimming and legs very richly inlaid with engraved brass in the form of floral and leaf motifs on a background of chiclet. In the chest there is a drawer with a steel overlay lock and a key. The top is edged with brass strips, as are the sides of the furniture, including the drawer. On the legs at the top there are bronze applications in the form of lion heads and rockaille patterns, going through the engraved brass sheet up to the base of the furniture, finished with an openwork cap.
Poplar construction, veneered with mahogany and ebony, marquetry of brass and tortoiseshell, bronze, late 19th century.
A piece of furniture decorated with a decorative technique popularized and perfected by the royal furniture designer Charles André Boulle (1642-1732). The technique consists of decorating a piece of furniture by pasting patterns cut in wood, china, brass or bone onto the wooden base of the frame. It is a very decorative technique, expensive because of the materials used, which makes it luxurious.
