Description
Longcase Clock, in a rectangular cabinet, with a slightly wider base and a hood glazed on the front, closed by a door. Turned fluted columns on the sides of the hood, the whole surmounted by a carved canopy. The mechanism has a weight winding, adjustable pendulum, with an hour system, a seconds hand and a date stamp, as well as a gong and a winding key. The dial is rectangular in shape with a rounded top, with a painted genre scene. In each corner of the dial painted views with buildings against a background of lush greenery. Dial with marked Roman hours and Arabic minutes, blackened numerals and smaller seconds scale.
Pine and mahogany construction, veneered with mahogany, woodcarving, brass appliqués, c. 1810.
The movement signed on the dial Jn Brown, Harleston.
Watchmaker John Brown of Harleston (near Diss, Norfolk) was active between 1801-1844.
Good condition, many traces of use visible. The mechanism needs cleaning.
