Description
A Boulle type writing Table with a top similar to an oval, with a wavy outline, supported on four cabriole legs. The top, frame and legs are richly inlaid with engraved brass sheets in the form of tendrils of plants, flowers and leaves on a tortoiseshell background. The box has a drawer with a steel, snap-on lock. The top is framed with a brass strip, as are the sides of the furniture, including the drawer. On the legs at the top there are openwork bronze applications in the form of openwork acanthus leaves and rockaille patterns, extending through an engraved brass sheet to the base of the furniture, finished with an openwork bronze overlay. There is a glass sheet on the countertop to protect the furniture.
Poplar construction, veneered with mahogany and ebony, tortoiseshell and brass sheet marquetry, bronze fittings, late 19th century.
The object in question comes from the private collection of Axel and Marguerita Wenner-Gren, the table can be seen in the middle photo on the right. Axel Wenner-Gren is a Swedish entrepreneur who in the 1930s was one of the richest people in the world.
